Woke Chicago is set to kick off its second annual walkathon and wellness challenge journeying into the end of November in Humboldt Park on Sunday, October 22, 2023.

We are all on our own healing journey but why not do it together in community? Woke Chicago plans to kick off their walkathon and month-long wellness challenge this October at the Humboldt Park Boathouse at 1301 N Humboldt Drive. Chicago, IL 60622 at 9 a.m.

The 22nd will offer a “pick-up party-feel” for registrants to celebrate, pick up their SWAG bag, partake in a 15-minute grounding meditation, and set off on a guided 1-mile nature walk with other attendees. The walk will conclude at the boathouse where there will be a 30-minute community yoga class ending at 11 a.m. The challenge then continues through Wednesday, November 22, 2023, where participants will partake in a daily wellness challenge in tandem with their fundraising efforts.

Many communities in the greater Chicago area are experiencing limited resources in wellness due to ongoing violence, systemic trauma, and lack of advocacy. Woke Chicago plans on reaching more of these communities by encouraging participants to take a pledge upon registering to set their own personal fundraising goals. With crowdfunding as their main strategy, Woke will be able to reach more people while sustaining their current programming in yoga, meditation, and mindfulness instruction into 2024.

From free community classes starting in June 2020 to working with the Black Hawks Healthy Hawks youth camp this summer, Woke is growing at an exceptional rate.

“We started by serving boxers in the North Lawndale area and now that's blossomed into many beautiful-wonderful things that we do in the community.” - Sarah Ford, Founder & Executive Director of Woke Chicago, said during a live interview on CBS Chicago.

This sensational media boost opened new doors of opportunity for Woke and they decided to not limit the walkathon to just one day this year. Through continued collaboration with local organizations, instructors, and an ever-growing cohort of volunteers, Woke has developed new curriculums and community training including their Community Ambassador Program (CAP), a seven-month community care journey. Their first cohort is set to graduate in October.

Woke Chicago’s second annual walkathon and wellness challenge will raise support for future educational programs, including a youth-mindful leadership program. Benefiting students in under-resourced communities is one of Woke’s main priorities to date. Creating young advocates will help to create a ripple effect to raise awareness among their peers and folks at home to make a bigger impact and lasting impression on the importance of yoga and mindfulness.

Registration is set to officially open this Monday, October 9th, 2023.

Woke Chicago is a non-profit organization formed in response to 2020’s cries for racial injustice and COVID-19’s disproportionate impact on communities of color. The organization seeks to disrupt inequity in well-being by creating access to trauma-informed movement and mindfulness programs within under-resourced Chicago communities and Chicago Public Schools. Woke Chicago’s mission is to create change from the inside out by reinventing the wellness culture to one rooted in unity, equity, and love.
