Meet Our Founder
Founder | Executive Director
Sarah Ford is a community leader & business architect with an executive MBA in Organizational behavior. Originally from Birmingham, Alabama, Sarah is currently living in Chicago where her passion for community, wellness, and innovative concepts inspired her to create Woke Chicago in early 2020.
Woke Chicago leverages community partnerships to create wellness access in neighborhoods of color and low-income. The organization has shared physical and mental wellness instruction with more than 700 students in West and Southside communities through yoga & mindfulness focused P.E. classes & after-school programs in CPS. Woke is now an official partner with Chicago Public Schools - poised & ready to impact more students in West & South Side communities this fall & BEYOND.
In her free time, Sarah leads with love in all things including baking, leading high-energy workout classes, and empowering women through digital storytelling.
MISSION & HISTORY.
We are a group of ordinary people responding to 2020 chaos with extraordinary compassion. We believe that sharing our love of Yoga, Meditation & Self Care practices with people in disempowered communities can bring healing. We also think that giving people an opportunity to see & support this work (virtually & in person) can deepen the healing. We will start this in Chicago & hope that sharing it brings on similar compassionate movements. -Woke Chicago Team
PROGRAMS & PROJECTS.
Woke Chicago is a black women-led, initiative-based non-profit
organization formed in response to 2020's cries for racial injustice in America & COVID-19's impact on communities of color. Our work disrupts inequity in well-being by creating access to trauma-informed movement and mindfulness programs within under-resourced Chicago communities and CPS schools. We strive to create change from the inside out & we are working hard to re-invent a wellness culture of impact that is rooted in unity, equity, and love.
Yoga & Movement
Our goal for all our participants is to focus on getting out of our heads, being more aware of our breath, moving our body with intention & savoring the present moment for what it truly is.
We wholeheartedly believe that utilizing mindfulness & self-care practices starting from a young and impressionable age will make a positive impact on a childs overall well-being.
We approach yoga by meeting everyone where they are by providing accessible movement for all levels, stretching our muscles & infusing relaxation into every session.
